2019/THE MANY BENEFITS OF METAL COMBS

3 min read

2/14/2019

Back in 2010, when we had the idea to start a comb business, there were virtually no metal combs on the market anymore.  The only metal comb still available back then was a very small and expensive silver baby comb made by Tiffany.  Online, fans of metal combs from days gone by - like the Swedish aluminum combs from the 1960s and 70s - lamented the disappearance of those sturdy workhorses.  The old metal comb makers had been drowned in a tsunami of cheap plastic combs.  But we were intrigued by the possibility of reintroducing these amazing types of combs to the market.

Chicago Comb the first company in decades to make new metal combs.  We were also the first to introduce high-tech laser technology to create combs, which provided unparalleled levels of precision and allowed us to make combs with amazing new designs (like the Model 1 and 2 combs) which could not have been made with the technology of the past.  We were also the first to work with new materials which had been absent from the comb industry, such as stainless steel and pure titanium.

The incredible durability of metal combs makes them a very good value.  You can buy a well-made stainless steel or titanium comb and literally use it every day for the rest of your life.  (And then pass it on to your son or grandson).  Metal combs cost more than plastic up front, but if you think of how often - and how long - you'll use it, the cost is tiny.  In the long run, a good metal comb costs less than any almost other product you'll ever own.  If you invest $35 in a great metal comb, over one year it costs you less than ten cents a day, and over a decade it's less than a penny a day.  It's also better for the environment to use a metal comb, rather than buying and replacing plastic combs as they break.

A good quality stainless steel or titanium comb is also naturally anti-static, and resists heat and chemicals far better than any plastic comb.  It also looks and feels amazing.  But not all metal combs are the same!  The absolutely critical thing is to find a comb which is made of high quality metal and has been properly polished and finished.  You need to make sure all the comb's surfaces are properly polished, and all the edges are rounded, so there are no sharp burrs or right angles that can snag or damage the hair.

That is where cheap metal combs fall short.  Properly polishing metal combs to the requisite level of smoothness and comfort required a lot of expert work that's done by hand.  And that expertise and labor adds costs.  Copycat companies from overseas selling cheap knockoffs don't spend the time and effort to polish their combs correctly; they are just looking for a quick sale.  And unfortunately, a lot of the so-called artisan metal comb makers that have sprung up over the years - often operating out of someone's garage - simply don't have the knowledge or skill to properly finish the combs.

A well-designed metal comb is not just beautiful to look at; it'll give you a lifetime of good service.  It's something you'll be proud to own and use every day.  And at the end of the day, it's also a very good value.
